Plain-language summary, compiled from the cited regulatory records
Lorazepam is a medication belonging to the benzodiazepine derivative class [1]. It is approved for managing anxiety disorders and for the short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including those associated with depressive symptoms [1]. Anxiety or tension related to everyday stress typically does not require treatment with an anxiolytic [1]. The clinical effectiveness of lorazepam for long-term use, beyond four months, has not been established through systematic studies [1]. Healthcare providers should periodically re-evaluate the need for continued treatment [1].
In the past 12 months, there have been 6,928 adverse event reports associated with lorazepam [2]. Among the frequently reported issues are off-label use, perceived ineffectiveness of the drug, fatigue, nausea, and aggravation of the patient's condition [2].
