Serious Warnings and Precautions The class of medicines to which emtricitabine and tenofovir DF, two of the components of TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR, belong (NRTIs) can cause a condition called lactic acidosis, together with an enlarged liver.
This rare but serious side effect has occasionally been fatal. The symptoms of lactic acidosis include: feeling very weak, tired or uncomfortable; unusual or unexpected stomach discomfort; feeling cold; feeling dizzy or lightheaded; suddenly developing an irregular heartbeat.
Lactic acidosis occurs more often in women, particularly if they are very overweight. You should consult your doctorimmediately if such symptoms occur while you are receiving TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR Non-specific symptoms of liver problems may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and yellowing of the skin and eyes.
If you notice these symptoms of lactic acidosis or liver problems, stop taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR and consult a doctor immediately. “Flare-ups” of Hepatitis B Virus infection, in which the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before, can occur if you stop taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR.
Do not stop taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR without your doctor’s advice. If you stop taking TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR, tell your doctor immediately about any new, unusual or worsening symptoms that you notice after stopping treatment.
After you stop taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/ TENOFOVIR, your doctor will still need to check your health and take blood tests to check your liver. TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection.
The most serious possible side effect is harm to the kidneys, including damage to kidney cells, kidney tissue inflammation and kidney failure. Your doctorr may monitor your kidney function before beginning and while receiving TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR.
Some patients treated with tenofovir DF (a component of TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR) have had kidney problems. Your doctor may need to perform additional blood tests if you have had kidney problems in the past or need to take another drug that can cause kidney problems.
Tenofovir DF, a component of TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR, caused harm to the bones of animals. If you notice bone pain, suffer a bone fracture, or other bone problem, consult your doctor. If you have bone problems, you may wish to discuss calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation with your doctor.

The effect of supplementation with calcium and/or vitamin D is unknown. Patients who experience dizziness, trouble concentrating or drowsiness should avoid driving or operating machinery. Women should not become pregnant while taking TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR and for 12 weeks after stopping it.
Serious birth defects have been seen in animals and women treated with efavirenz (a component of TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/ TENOFOVIR) during pregnancy. It is not known whether efavirenz caused these defects. g. implants, injections).
TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR may remain in your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue use of a reliable form of contraception for 12 weeks after stopping treatment with TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR.
If you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR, your doctor may register you in the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. The Registry monitors fetal outcomes in pregnant women using antiretroviral medicines.
A small number of patients taking efavirenz, one of the components of TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/ TENOFOVIR, have had severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Some patients have had thoughts of suicide and a few patients have actually committed suicide.
These problems tend to occur more often in patients with a history of mental illness. You should contact your doctor immediately if you think you are having these symptoms, so your doctor can decide whether you should continue to take TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR.
Consult your doctor if you have a rash since some rashes may be serious. g. Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
If you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed:
Do not breast- feed if you have HIV or are taking TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/ EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR. HIV can be passed to your baby in your breast milk. All components of TEVA- EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR,efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir DF, can be passed to your baby in your breast milk and may cause harm to your baby.
Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby.
If you have other medical conditions:
Let your doctor know if you have other medical conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), seizures IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ TEVA-EFAVIRENZ/EMTRICITABINE/TENOFOVIR Product Monograph 68 or mental illness, or have or are at risk for bone disease or bone- related problems.
If you have or have had a heart rhythm disorder such as: lengthening of QT interval irregular heartbeat a heart condition, Torsades de pointes If you are taking other medicines: Some medicines can interact when taken together, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal products and dietary supplements (see INTERACTIONS WITH THIS MEDICATION).
